BAG FREE BEECROFT Beecroft is Better!

What we do in our local area DOES make a difference.
David Attenborough: “We have a responsibility, every one of us. We may think we live a long way from the oceans, but we don’t. What we actually do here … has a direct effect on the oceans – and what the oceans do then reflects back on us.”

Bag Free Beecroft is a campaign organised by Greens member and Ward C Hornsby Shire Councillor Emma Heyde. Emma said she was inspired by friend’s stories of plastic waste at beaches and waterways, and their unsightly effect. Local residents joined together to sew reusable bags and provide them for shoppers at the Beecroft shops. Shoppers are responsible for bringing their own reusable bags, and the movement has been actively supported by the community as cost-effective and good for the environment.

“We have created a partnership between shoppers and businesses in Beecroft,” said Emma. “Shoppers bring their own bags; businesses don’t hand so many out. Now Woolworths is on board with that partnership. Everyone who has volunteered their time and skills to help reduce plastic waste in Beecroft deserves to feel a huge sense of achievement. We weren’t the only ones working to get rid of plastic bags, but our campaign made Woolies sit up and listen. We’re really proud of that.”
